Who We Are

Stradbrook Sings is a non-auditioned SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) community choir. We love singing together and sharing our voices with others. The choir rehearses weekly on Friday mornings and has monthly opportunities for socialization and community-building.

Our singers value the new friendships they have made. Warm smiles are frequent reminders that someone in the room cares when you walk through the door.

“Everyone is very friendly and welcoming.”

Our choir sings fun, uplifting and well-known music in a variety of styles and harmonies.

Some recent favourites include:

What We Do

Stradbrook Sings believes in sharing our music and joy with others. We sing-out for older adults in structured communities and perform annual concerts for our friends and loved ones. Stradbrook is also invited to sing at community events around the city.

Senior Sing-Outs

During the winter and spring seasons, smaller groups of choir members perform for seniors in assisted living centres and personal care homes. These performances bring joy to both our singers and our audiences who love to sing along!

Annual Concerts

Each year, Stradbrook hosts two main concerts where our singers are able to share the songs they have rehearsed for a wider community audience. These concerts are a highlight for our singers where they are able to perform together in full numbers (over 90+). These events are full of warm welcomes, vibrant singing and tasty treats.

Our annual concerts often feature a local charity or organization as a beneficiary.

Choir History

Age & Opportunity Support Services offers choir as part of its recreational programming.

Past

Katie Erickson is hired by Age & Opportunity as pianist for the choir program.

2008

John Tanner is hired by Age & Opportunity as director of the choir program.

2013

Age & Opportunity restructures their programming and choir is no longer offered. John and Katie decide to continue the choir independently. The ‘Stradbrook Ave. Show Choir’ is created. The name uses the location of rehearsals and the choir’s love of singing show tunes as the inspiration for the name.

2014

Helen Bergen is asked to join as co-director. She transitions to director as John Tanner moves towards retirement.

2015-16

Following a break during the pandemic, the choir relocates from its longtime Stradbrook address to Fort Garry United Church. Singers appreciate the accessibility of the neighbourhood for walking and parking at rehearsals.

2022

Marilyn Dudeck, the choir’s Communication Liaison, coordinates a media initiative to reach the greater Winnipeg community. Most notably, the choir is featured in an article for the Free Press Community review by Emma Honeybun. Membership explodes and the choir quickly gains over 60 new members. Numbers continue to expand each season.

2023

The choir undergoes a refresh. A new logo and website are designed. Stradbrook Sings is chosen as the new name.
